Hydrotherapy



Hydrotherapy is the use of water for recuperative and healing purposes.

Hydrotherapy treatment is largely considered to be the oldest form of medical treatment known to man. Hydrotherapy tubs and other items of hydrotherapy equipment are still used in modern times for a vast range of therapeutic measures.

Health care for globe trotters



50% of people, who travel, suffer a travel – related illness. All travelers should be well prepared for travel and be prepared to protect themselves from travel related illness. In this issue various aspects of travel related illness have been discussed with related protective measures.According to ayurveda traveling causes vitiation of vata dosha.

Vata dosha regulates all the activities of body like digestion, respiration, excretion, transmission of nerve impulses ,reflexes, body movements etc. When vata gets vitiated due to traveling all these normal functions of body also get imbalanced .The imbalances in body functions project themselves as travel related illness.Motion sickness: Almost every body are susceptible to motion sickness. Fatigue, giddiness, deprivation of sleep, nausea and vomiting are the main unwelcome symptoms of motion sickness.

Avoid consuming alcohol, pain killers, spicy foods, fried foods and junk foods during traveling. Try to relax and chose a window seat. Do not read or talk. Or watch someone who is motion sick.Eat light food. Include pomegranate, ginger and curds in your diet while traveling. Rinse your mouth and wash your face with cold water as soon as you take your food.Diarrhea: Though travelers’ diarrhea is mild inconvenience to a traveler, it may at times be life threatening too. Upsets in digestive system frequently occur in travelers due to stress, time zone changes, irregular meal times and new foods. But serious diarrhea during traveling is caused by bacteria, viruses or parasitic infections.

The best way out is to take ample precautionary measures.Wash your hands frequently. Use sanitizing liquids, hand washes or gels which cleanse the hands without water. Always use disposable hygienically packed tissue papers than towels. Avoid street, roadside foods, buffet meals. Select food which is well cooked and served hot. Thick-skinned fruits which you can peel yourself are usually safe. Avoid raw or undercooked meat, fish, uncooked vegetables, salads. Be care full with unpasteurized milk and milk products. Always use sealed mineral water, canned juices and beverages.

Never use ice cubes or unsealed bottled beverages. Bottled Beer, wine and hot coffee or tea are safe. Drink from original containers or clean glassesIf you get mild diarrhea eat light ,soft and semi solid foods like idli, soups etc which are easily digestible. Avoid heavy, spicy and non vegetarian foods. Drink plenty of fruit juices.(canned or hygienically packed.). Keep yourself well hydrated. Consult a doctor immediately if diarrhea leads to dehydration.

Constipation: people often become constipated when traveling because their normal diet and daily routines are disrupted. Drink plenty of water and consume food which are rich in fibers to avoid constipation .Try to adhere to routine food timings .Drink a big glass of water every day morning. Avoid frequent consumption of tea or coffee. Taking two thriphala tablets with warm water before going to bed helps to normalize bowel movements. These tablets should be avoided during pregnancy.

Tired feet Even healthy people can get blood clots in their legs after long hours of traveling. Try to walk every now and then. Drink water, stretch your calf muscles while you're sitting and wear support stockings.

Foot bath for tired feet: Massage your foot with little coconut oil and soak them in warm water . You can add few drops of lavender oil or peppermint oil or sandal wood oil to warm water. After a foot bath rub your foot. Relax after a foot bath.

Prevention of Malaria: To prevent mosquito bites and malaria wear mosquito repellent .Stay indoors between dusk and dawn. The malaria spreading mosquitoes generally feed at this time. Apply mosquito repellent, to your clothes and bedding. Wear socks, long pants, and long-sleeve shirts when outdoors. Use a mosquito net while sleeping. Stay in air-conditioned, screened accommodation.

Jet lag To avoid jet lag get plenty of sleep before you leave. Don't drink a lot of alcohol while on flight. Eat well-balanced meals and avoid over eating. Exercise as much as you can on your trip. Get used to a new time zone by going along with the local meal and bedtime schedules.

Accidents: Do not drive in unfamiliar places where you know less about that regional language, road conditions, rules of the road, condition of the vehicles. etc. Choose your transportation carefully. Check the security, life saving facilities provided in the transport. Chose, the cab with seat belts, hotels with fire escape and ferries with life preservers. Never swim in unknown rivers or seas when you are not familiar with sea currents and waves.

Sex: Have a safe sex when you are with unfamiliar new partners. Alcohol, drugs and sex are dangerous combinationImmunization: Get immunized with vaccines before traveling. Avoid animal bites and saliva. If you are bitten by dog wash the wound immediately with soap and water.Travel during pregnancy: If you chose to travel during pregnancy the second trimester (weeks 14 to 27) is the best time. Before traveling take the opinion of your consulting doctor and provide him the sufficient details about the places you are visiting, mode of transport etc.Tips for older travelers See your doctor for a checkup and discuss your fitness .See your dentist and ophthalmologist. Keep a spare pair of glasses, any medications you need in a small medical kit. Organize travel health insurance with pre-existing illness cover if needed. Make sure it covers emergency evacuation. Make sure routine immunizations are done before traveling. Consider your back - use luggage with built in wheels. Take clothes and hats to suit the climate. Other safety precautions: Check with the regional office or through internet the situation of places you are planning to visit. The destination places must be free from riots, terrorism, floods or other calamities.

Mental tensions: Preparations for traveling lead to worry and tensions. Here are few relaxing tips before and during traveling.

1. Close your eyes , take five deep breaths through your nose and pay attention only to your breathing while doing this.

2. Taking a hot shower relaxes your muscles, and the break from more stressful activities helps too.

3. Laugh. Laughing helps to relax. Find people who can make you laugh and make your moments lighter..

4. Listen to relaxing music.

5. Take a walk.

Massaging the scalp and hair with warm oil, preferably infused with hair-friendly herbs, is the best way to nourish the scalp and hair topically. Not only does the massage work wonders for your hair, but it also relaxes the mind and nervous system.

The oil for the massage can be customized by hair and body type. If your hair is thin, dry and frizzy and prone to split-ends, you have Vata hair. If you have fine hair prone to premature thinning or graying, you are Pitta-predominant. If you are predominantly Kapha, your hair will tend to be thick and oily.

A warm oil massage, done at least once a week (if you have more Vata in your make-up, you would want to try to do it two to three times a week), has the following benefits:

If you are Vata-predominant, choose almond oil or sesame oil as the base oil. Both of these oils are very nourishing for the scalp and hair and help reduce stiffness and tightness in the scalp.
For Pitta persons, cooling coconut oil is the ideal choice. Because coconut is very Pitta-pacifying, coconut oil massage can retard hair problems such as thinning and premature graying that are associated with an aggravated Pitta dosha.

If you are Kapha-predominant, sesame or olive oil are good choices. Olive oil has purifying properties that help keep pores open.

While massaging with a dosha-appropriate base oil can be helpful, ayurvedic oils designed for hair and scalp massage typically include one or more hair-friendly herbs to augment the benefit of the massage. Traditionally, these herbs are slow-cooked with the oil, and the oil is then strained and ready for use.

Brahmi helps calm the mind and nervous system, pacifies Vata and is very nourishing for the hair. It helps promote hair thickness and body.

Amalaki is cooling, nourishing and purifying all at the same time, so it is wonderful for all types of hair. It is especially beneficial for Pitta-predominant people because it pacifies Pitta and helps ward off premature thinning and graying of hair. It also helps prevent dry scalp and flakes.
Bhringaraj, which translates to “king of tresses,” is also Pitta-pacifying and very nourishing for the hair.

Hibiscus is cooling and helps maintain hair color and vitality.

Neem is good for Kapha hair; it has purifying and cleansing properties.

Rosemary and Lavender are excellent for all types of hair. Rosemary helps stimulate hair follicles and promotes growth, helps retard premature thinning and graying, and soothes and conditions the scalp. Lavender stimulates hair growth, balances oil production and replenishes the hair and scalp.

Jasmine helps alleviate stress.

How to Do the Scalp and Hair Self-Massage

Pour some oil into a bowl and warm the oil by placing the bowl in some hot water. The oil should be warm but comfortable to the touch.

Using the pads of your fingers, apply the oil little by little to different parts of your scalp, parting your hair as needed. Also work some oil along the length of your hair. Then, using the pads of your fingers, work the oil into your scalp, using circular motions. Slow, deliberate movements are relaxing while steady but vigorous movement helps enhance energy and circulation.

Cover your entire scalp, all the way down the sides to your ears and at the back to your neck. Leave the oil on for at least 30-60 minutes, longer if you can.

If you like, you can dip a towel in hot water, wring it out, and wrap it around your head after your massage for added conditioning and softening of hair. You can even leave the oil on overnight - place a thick towel over your pillow to protect your linens.

Shampoo out with a gentle, natural shampoo.

Headache (cephalalgia in medical terminology) is a condition of pain in the head; sometimes neck or upper back pain may also be interpreted as a headache. Headache, like chest pain or dizziness, has many causes. All headaches are considered primary headaches or secondary headaches. Primary headaches are not associated with other diseases. The most common type of headache is a tension headache. As many as 90% of adults have tension headaches. Tension headaches are more common among women than men. They are often related to stress, depression, or anxiety. Overworking, not getting enough sleep, missing meals, and using alcohol or street drugs can make you more susceptible to them. Headaches can be triggered by chocolate, cheese, and monosodium glutamate (MSG). People who drink caffeine can have headaches when they don't get their usual daily amount. Migraine headaches are the second most common type of primary headache. An estimated 28 million people in the US have migraine headaches. Migraine headaches affect children as well as adults. Before puberty, boys and girls are affected equally by migraine headaches, but after puberty more women than men have them. Migraine often goes undiagnosed or is misdiagnosed as tension or sinus headaches.

Rebound headache ,which are also known as analgesic-abuse headaches, are a subtype of primary headache caused by overuse of headache drugs. Cluster headaches are a rare but important type of primary headache, affecting mainly men. Cluster headaches occur daily over a period of weeks, sometimes months. Cluster headaches primarily affect men between the ages of 20 and 40. Traction and inflammatory headaches are symptoms of other disorders, ranging from stroke to sinus infection. Cluster headaches may last between five minutes and three hours; they may occur once every other day or as often as eight times per day. The IHS classifies cluster headaches as either episodic or chronic. Episodic cluster headaches occur over periods lasting from seven days to one year, with the clusters separated by headache-free intervals of at least two weeks. The average length of a cluster ranges between two weeks and three months. Cluster headaches have diverse causes, ranging from serious and life threatening conditions such as brain tumors, strokes, meningitis, and subarachnoid hemorrhages to less serious but common conditions such as withdrawal from caffeine and discontinuation of analgesicsChronic cluster headaches occur over a period longer than a year without a headache-free interval, or with pain-free intervals that are shorter than two weeks.

Headaches can have many causes, but serious causes of headaches are rare. Sometimes headaches warn of a more serious disorder. Tension headaches Episodic tension headaches are usually relieved fairly rapidly by such over-the-counter analgesics as aspirin (300–600 mg every four hours), Some forms of headache, such as migraine, may be amenable to preventative treatment. Migraine headaches may respond to aspirin, naproxen, or combination migraine medications. Headaches require medical attention, and respond with simple analgesia (painkillers) such as paracetamol/acetaminophen or members of the NSAID class (such as aspirin/acetylsalicylic acid or ibuprofen). Migraine headaches Medications can be prescribed to prevent migraines as well as to treat the symptoms of an acute attack. Drugs that are given for migraine prophylaxis (to prevent or lower the frequency of migraine attacks) include tricyclic antidepressants, beta-blockers, and anti-epileptic drugs, which are also known as anti-convulsants. Corticosteroid drugs can be used to provide temporary relief from the attacks whilst one of the preventative treatments listed above is being introduced. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Motrin), and naproxen (Aleve) are helpful for early or mild migraines.

Koalas are not the only beings that reap the benefits of eucalyptus. There are about 300 varieties of eucalyptus globules, a tree native to mainland Australia and Tasmania. With so many varieties it is one of Australia's most distinguishing flora.

The Tree

The eucalyptus tree has leaves that hang obliquely or vertically from its stem and are leathery to the touch. Glands within the leaves secrete a fragrant, volatile oil used for many medicinal purposes.

When in bud, eucalyptus blossoms are covered in a cup-like membrane, hence the name which translates to "well-covered." In full bloom, the flower full expands and the "lid" of the membrane falls off. The eucalyptus fruit is held in a cup-shaped, woody receptacle that also contains many tiny seeds.

Eucalyptus trees grow rapidly. Many of its species grow to a height of 480 feet, surpassing even that of the California giant sequoia. Eucalyptus trees render timber but they are all the more valuable for the oil they produce. The oils derived from eucalyptus leaves are roughly divided into three classes of commercial significance: the medicinal oils, the industrial oils, and the aromatic oils.

Therapeutic Oils

The valuable oils found in eucalyptus are taken from the leaves by a process called aqueous distillation. Eucalyptus oil can be colorless or straw-colored, has a unique odor and flavor, and is soluble in its own weight of alcohol. It is likely the most powerful antiseptic of its class, and has an important disinfectant action. Eucalyptus oil becomes more potent with age, and can be used to destroy lower forms of life.

The most important component of eucalyptus oil is eucalyptol. Species of eucalyptus globulus contain up to 70 percent eucalyptol, making it a capable disinfectant.

When taken internally, eucalyptus oil acts like a typical volatile oil to a remarkable degree. The oil is a stimulant and is sometimes used as an antiseptic gargle. Applied topically, eucalyptus oil can diminish sensibility and increase cardiac action. The natural antiseptic properties of eucalyptus oil may provide some response against malaria; however it is not as powerful as cinchona, a more traditional anti-malarial remedy.

The ability to balance and stimulate are two of the significant effects of eucalyptus. The middle note aroma is suggestive of camphorous and woody scents, making it an important ingredient in nasal inhalants and aromatherapy products. Eucalyptus provides several medicinal properties, making it useful as an antiviral, analgesic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and a stimulant.

Eucalyptus can be used to treat burns, cuts, influenza, and headaches. The potent aroma of eucalyptus acts as a powerful insect repellant. Among its many other uses, it can be used to treat wounds, muscle aches, rheumatism, sinusitis, skin ulcers and urinary infections.

Inhaling Eucalyptus Steam

Steam inhalations can be very beneficial as they all hot, moist air to enter the respiratory tract. Eucalyptus is a natural choice for steam inhalations, as it is widely regarded for its decongestant properties. Using the oil as a steam inhalation can help to unblock sinuses and nasal passages.

Prepare a eucalyptus steam inhalation by gathering the following materials: a kettle with boiling water, eucalyptus oil, a sheet or large towel and a sizable bowl or container.

With the materials at hand, pour about four to six cups of boiling water from the kettle to the bowl. Add three drops of eucalyptus oil to the boiling water. Place your head over the bowl with your eyes looking downward. Use the sheet or towel as a "tent" to enclose your face and head over the bowl. With eyes closes, inhale deeply and breathe slowly. Continue for about 15 minutes, or until the nasal passages are cleared.

This is muscle weakness that varies in its extent, severity and degree of flaccidity or spasticity according to the nature of the underlying disorder and its distribution in spinal cord, brain, peripheral nerves or muscles.

Types of Paralysis

Paraplegia:

It occurs usually due to injury or disease of spinal cord and occurs in both the legs. It is generally accompanied by loss of sensation below the level of injury and disturbed bladder function.

Diplegia:

This type of paralysis involves both sides of the body, and severly affects the legs than the arms. Cerebral diplegia is far more severe and dangerous when the damage is widespread.

Hemiplegia:

It is paralysis of one side of the body, when movements of face are affected more severely than those of the leg. It is caused by disease of the opposite (contralateral) hemisphere of the brain.

Monoplagia:

It is paralysis of a single part of the body.

Poliomyelitis:

It is a technical name for polio or infantile Paralysis. It is caused by an infective virus that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The disease can be divided into various categories which are of no interest to a reader. This disorder is most common in those areas where there is poor sanitation poliomyelitis is common is most areas in our country, but the disease can be controlled.

Locomotor Ataxia or Tabes dorsalis:

It is a form when neurosyphilis occurs after 5-20 years after the (original) venereal infection. The infecting organisms gradually or progressively destroy the sensory nerves, when severe stabbing pains occur in the trunk and legs, gait becomes tottering or staggering and unsteady, loss of control over bladder is another accompanying symptom. A few patients may have damage of optic nerves that results in blurred vision. Young or middle aged persons are often the victims. Nomeclation of disease depends on the affection of a particular area of body like brain, spinal cord or nerves; that is why terms like cerebral, spinal or peripheral paralysis are often used.

Shaking or Trembling Paralysis or Paralysis Agitans, or Parkinsonism (Parkinson's disease) are the terms used for rigidty of muscles and rhythmical tremors.

Other types include wasting paralysis, progressive muscular atroply, Facial Paralysis (or Bell's Palsy). Paralysis is a disease, of whatever eteology it may belong to, that takes much longer to cure, when patience of both the patient and physian as also of the attendants is on hard test.

Home Remedies

Try following combinations either severely or jointly, depending upon stage, condition and symptoms of the subject patient.

Powder of Ashwagandha - 1gm, Vata Vidhwansan Rasa - 1 gm, Chopcheeni chuma - 50mg, Pippli Moola - 1gm should be taken thrice daily with water.

Rasanadi Quath (50ml) may be taken twice daily.

Vrihat Vata Chentamani Ras - 25mg, Ashwagandha Chuma - 1 gm. Take it as a one dose.

Take 2 such doses with soup of weat(12 hourly dose).

125mg of Rasaraj a should be taken as last thing in the night with milk.

Massage the affected parts with Mahanarayan taila.

Mix up 50 ml Mashabaladi Quath, 50 mg asafoetida and 500 mg of Rock salt and shake well and store in a bottle having a dropper. It should be used as nasal drops - for the purpose of being inserted in the opposite nostril to the affected side. For instance if paralysis has affected right side, use drops in the left nostril and so on.

For Memory impairment and loss of memory, it is always better to seek advice of an experienced physician. Memory failure in old age lasts long; hence treatment is also for longer duration; childhood symptoms can be met with earlier success, traumatic memory failure is not difficult to cure but needs careful and constant monitoring and treatment; hence no hard and fast rules can be applied.

Skin is the seat of a sense organ. Skin is also the dwelling of Bhrajaka pitta and regulates the temperature of the living body and absorbs all local medicinal applications. Vata skin is in generaly dry. It is very vulnerable to the influence of dry windy weather. Vata skin may age faster, and tends to be dry, rough and flaky when out of balance. Medically skin is a sensory organ that responds to reflexes and is a protective system that shields the entire living body. As ayurveda believes that all living beings have the panchamahabhoota as it is components, same is for skin. There are many ways to keep the body in balance. The one that is ignored the most is the skin. It is the largest organ of the body.

The complexion and luster of our skin is also conferred to the skin. Protect as much of your skin as possible when you go out on cold windy days. Draw a light scarf across the lower part of your face and pull a cap down over your forehead. Wear a protective coating of natural moisturizer on your face. Drink extra water to support moisture balance from within. Favor spring water with a pH of 7.5 for balanced hydration. Brahmi (Bacopa), Shatavari (Indian Asparagus), Amla (Indian Gooseberry), Gotu kola (Indian Pennywort) and Ashwagandha (Winter Cherry) are potent Vata-pacifying skin rasayanas that help support skin elasticity, moisture balance, texture and radiance. Apply a paste made from one teaspoon of cumin seeds. Remove after one hour.

A warm oil self-massage is excellent for keeping skin lubricated. Use a gentle, all-natural moisturizer to keep facial skin hydrated. Kapha skin, because of its thickness and oiliness, is more prone to accumulate ama -- toxins under the skin. Amla, Bhringaraj (Eclipta alba), Kumari (aloe vera), White Sandalwood, Red Sandalwood and Lajawanti (Mimosa) are considered the pre-eminent Pitta-pacifying skin rasayanas. Neem, Manjistha (Indian Madder), Triphala, Tulsi (Holy Basil) and Turmeric are potent Kapha-balancing skin rasayanas. They help detoxify the skin while nourishing it at the same time. A paste of fresh fenugreek leaves, applied and washed off with warm water before going to bed prevents pimples.

Importance of Ayurveda

Ayurveda has been widely recognized as a system of natural health care congenial to the health needs of women. All over the world more and more women are turning to herbal medicine so that they have total control on their bodies throughout the year, throughout their lives. Vedas are the ancient books of knowledge, or science, from India. They contain practical and scientific information on various subjects beneficial to the humanity like health, philosophy, engineering, astrology etc. Ayurveda helps women find their own body rhythm, which is closely linked with nature and its changes resulting in lasting solutions to their health problems.

As women respond both mentally and physically better to Ayurveda, it is known as a women's health care system. Ayurveda gives equal importance to mental health for which a regime of ethical life (sadurutta) is prescribed. Ayurveda is the science of life. Ayurveda is a science dealing not only with treatment of some diseases but is a complete way of life. Strict mental discipline and strict adherence to moral values is considered a pre-requisite for mental health. Finally herbs that are pungent, bitter and astringent ameliorate Kapha-water, which means they tend to increase digestive fire, expel and dry excessive fluid build up in the system, including clearing excessive fat from the body, and the accumulation of cholesterol and other fatty deposits in the veins and arteries of the body.

Ayurveda had recognized the importance of the environment in the total health. Remember, everything in your environment is composed of doshas that interact with your own doshas. Ayurvedic health care enhances the results of Yoga. Ayurvedic healthcare is the best bet for women to stop the aging process. Periodic rejuvenation therapy will keep health, beauty and zest for life intact throughout the years. Ayurveda gives equal importance to mental health for which a regime of ethical life is prescribed. Herbs that have pungent, sour and salty flavors stimulate fire; herbs that are astringent (drying) and bitter stimulate vata-air, or the nerve centered humour; herbs that are sweet, salty and sour stimulate or increase Kapha-water, or the mucoid humour. Strict mental discipline and strict adherence to moral values is considered a pre-requisite for mental health. The aim of Ayurveda is to promote health, increase immunity and resistance-and to cure Disease.

Ayurveda understands that health is a reflection of when a person is living in harmony with nature and disease arises when a person is out of harmony with the cycles of nature. Ayurveda helps each individual realign their living patterns to bring about health and peace and to remember that their true nature is Spirit. Ayurveda gives equal importance to both preventive and curative aspects. Ayurveda offers methods of finding out early stages of diseases that are still undetectable by modern medical investigation. It is the knowledge of life in its entirety, that is body, mind and soul.

The ayurveda treatments can be clasified into(Six):

1. Massages.

2. Dhara.

3. Kizhi.

4. Vasthi.

5. Eye treatments.

6. Panchakarma.
